DIAGNOSING PSP & CBD
We hosted our second masterclass of 2025 with Dr Boyd Ghosh, Consultant Neurologist, Wessex Neurological Centre on 25 June.
This masterclass was designed to equip healthcare professionals with the critical knowledge and tools to identify and manage these complex and often misdiagnosed neurological conditions.
Up to 60% of individuals with PSP or CBD are initially misdiagnosed, with a confirmed diagnosis commonly delayed by up to three years. This session aims to bridge that gap by empowering clinicians with up-to-date insights that support earlier recognition and improved patient care.
This masterclass provided the knowledge to:
- Recognise the early clinical signs of PSP & CBD, across both motor and non-motor domains.
- Differentiate PSP & CBD from other neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other atypical parkinsonian syndromes.
- Apply effective strategies to manage the evolving symptoms of PSP & CBD.
- Appreciate the vital role of a multidisciplinary approach in ensuring timely diagnosis and coordinated care.
Together, we can drive earlier recognition and meaningful change for people living with PSP & CBD.
NEURO-ORTHOPTICS IN PROGRESSIVE SUPRANUCLEAR PALSY
Dominic Burdon, Advance Orthoptist, Plymouth Ocular Motility Unit
We hosted an online masterclass on 25 March to help ophthalmic professionals understand Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and how it affects the eyes.
PSP significantly affects various ocular and oculomotor functions. Despite eye changes beginning early in PSP progression, 60% of people are still initially misdiagnosed, with an accurate diagnosis on average taking three years to achieve.
To aid early diagnosis and access to appropriate care, this masterclass will help you to:
- Gain an understanding of general and ocular features of PSP.
- Recognise the value of a Parkinson’s Plus MDT approach, to aid earlier suspected diagnosis of PSP.
- Apply knowledge of neuroanatomy to understand the pathogenesis for ocular signs in PSP.
- Examine and evaluate optical management for PSP.
